From Idea to Bankable Project: What Investors Look For

Across Africa, many promising projects struggle to raise funding. In most cases, the problem is not the idea. It is that the project is not yet ready for investors.

A bankable project is one that a financier can assess, understand and fund with confidence.

The essentials

Feasibility. Investors need evidence that the project works technically, commercially and environmentally. A credible feasibility study answers these questions before they are asked.

Financial model. A clear model shows costs, revenues, returns and the assumptions behind them. Investors will test it, so it needs to hold up.

Risk allocation. Every project carries risk. Bankable projects show who carries each risk and how it is managed or mitigated.

Committed sponsors. Investors back people as much as projects. A committed sponsor with a track record, and with some of their own capital at stake, makes a significant difference.

Bringing it together

An investment memorandum brings all of this into one clear, professional document that tells investors what the opportunity is, why it matters and how it will deliver returns.

Preparing projects to this standard early shortens the path from first meeting to financial close, and improves the chances of reaching it at all.
